Drum Brake Shoe Replacement Service in Seattle
While many modern Volkswagen vehicles are equipped with front and rear disc brakes, older models may be equipped with rear drum brakes. If this is the case, the brake shoes will eventually need to be replaced. Carter Volkswagen stocks OEM VW brake shoes, and our technicians will be glad to perform this service. Keep reading for more valuable information about drum brakes.
Does My Volkswagen Have Drum Brakes?
An easy way to tell what kind of brakes your VW has is simply to look at them. Peer through the spokes on one of the front wheels and you'll see the brakes. Unless you're rocking a truly vintage VW, you'll see shiny discs behind the front wheels. These are disc brakes. Now, check the back. If they look the same, your VW is equipped with rear disc brakes. But if what you see is dull, round, and shaped kind of like a drum, your Volkswagen is equipped with rear drum brakes.
How Should I Maintain Drum Brakes?
The brake shoes in drum brakes function similarly to the discs in disc brakes: they bear the brunt of the braking force by pressing against the inside of the drum, creating friction that slows down the vehicle. This means that they wear down. Despite their functional similarities to brake pads, they are much more complicated to replace. That's why we recommend leaving it to the experts.
The good news about brake shoes is that they do tend to last longer than brake pads, so service shouldn't be required as frequently. However, driving style can change this. Depending on how you drive and other environmental factors, you could need new brake shoes as often as every 25,000 miles (or sooner) or as infrequently as every 70,000 miles. Because of this, we recommend that you have the brake shoes inspected every other oil change.
