2020 Volkswagen Tiguan Trim Levels

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan is a hard concept to nail down, but that is part of what makes it one of the most popular SUVs around the world right now. You may have been in a 3-row Tiguan and assumed they were all the way, or you might own a 2-row Tiguan and can’t imagine it any other way.

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan picks up some of the slack left behind when the Volkswagen Touareg was discontinued in the United States a few years ago. The Tiguan is not fickle like many other crossovers from other automakers that are trying to look as much like sports cars as possible. Instead, updates to the Tiguan have revolved around safety and interior technology. The nine trim levels embrace these changes to different degrees. The chart below illustrates some of the defining features of each trim, with the trims listed in ascending order.

Trim Level Comparison

Nine trim levels may seem like a lot, but there is a little trick to narrowing down your choices. If you think of the trims in terms of trim families, you get four main trim levels; S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium. For the most part, the trims with R-Line get an aesthetic upgrade, but the safety, engine specifications, and technology features do not change. Any trim mentioning 4MOTION® has Volkswagen 4MOTION® AWD. The SEL Premium is a trim unto itself since it includes the best of everything. If you live in an area where 4MOTION® AWD is important because of snow, sand, or other hazards, get one of those trims and ignore the others. There are no alternate engine options on the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan, so moving up to a higher trim represents an improvement in interior comfort, technology, and safety equipment more than anything else.
